AFRIEL Hands Over Prime Minister a Recommendation Paper for a New Constitution

AFRIEL youth met the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe today to hand over a report on public opinions and recommendations relating to a new Constitution. The report is based on 416 public consultations conducted with 5796 individuals in 22 districts.

AFRIEL Team Leader, Ravindra De Silva spoke briefly about how the need for a new constitution is not only felt by the people in the North, but Sinhala people in the South too have realized the need for a new constitution. He also mentioned that certain political groups are working to mislead the masses about the constitution making process and denounce a new constitution for Sri Lanka.

The public discussions were supported by the Internews Sri Lanka, an international nonprofit organization which works to ensure access to trusted, quality information that empowers people to have a voice in their future and to live healthy, secure, and rewarding lives, as well as the National Endowment for Democracy.
