In the past decade, AFRIEL developed and disseminated training handbooks to enhance the knowledge and capacity of youth and volunteers in human rights, democracy, and governance. These publications proved invaluable in empowering youth to address rights-based issues within their communities.
Through this engagement, youth identified areas where government institutions could benefit from improved knowledge, leading to the development of publications and guidelines on the topics such as citizen rights, right to information, conflict reporting. The experiences of youth and victims, garnered from community interactions and collaboration with government institutions, were translated into policy papers and proposals for governance changes, including human rights, political solutions, constitutional reform, reconciliation, national unity, election law violation mitigation, right to information, land mediation, and provincial council system.
Concerning policy reforms, AFRIEL youth presented creative and specific proposals in 2022, fostering dialogues with all political parties to contribute to Sri Lanka’s economic and political stability peacefully. AFRIEL also facilitated the development a strategic plan on right to information for the Media Ministry’s to improve the government’s information-sharing process with citizens over the next five years.
AFRIEL has produced a comprehensive array of materials, including 2 surveys, 8 training modules, 4 printed newsletters, 4 reports, 15 recommendation papers, 6 books, and 1 strategic plan for a government institute.
